Spiders Wrap up Record-Setting Season at NCAA Regionals

BERMUDA RUN, N.C. — One of the greatest seasons in Richmond Spiders men's golf history came to a close Wednesday at the NCAA Regionals in Winston-Salem. The Spiders, who won a program-record four tournaments during the season and captured the Atlantic 10 title for just the second time, finished 11th in the 14-team field at Bermuda Run Country Club, equaling their best NCAA Regionals finish in the last 25 years. Richmond's 54-hole score of 7-over par (859) placed UR in front of Little Rock, Presbyterian, and Navy.
Junior Jack LaPiana led Richmond with a 2-under 69 in Wednesday's final round, three shots better than his 1-over in Round 2 and an even more substantial improvement from his 9-over in Round 1.
"I never really gave up after a pretty bad first round," said LaPiana. "It felt good to shoot a low round the last round, but obviously I wish I could have done it the first couple of rounds too and help out the team a little more. I just kept grinding and stayed patient and didn't give up on it."
Sophomore Carson Baez joined LaPiana in red figures Wednesday with a 1-under 70, his team-leading 20th under-par round this season. He finished the event as the low Spider at even par (213), tied for 33rd in the field.
Freshman Lucas Rizo-Patron was one shot behind at 1-over par (214) to finish tied for 37th at his first event since winning the individual title at last month's A-10 Championship.
Junior Quin Polin, an All-Atlantic 10 selection, tied for 58th at 6-over par (219), two shots in front of LaPiana, who tied for 64th. Drew Carlin, the lone senior on the Richmond roster, placed 66th at 10-over par (223) in his final collegiate event.
UR's 1tth-place finish matched its 11th-place result in the 13-team NCAA Regional in West Lafayette, Ind., in 2017, Richmond's last NCAA Regionals appearance prior to this season. The only time the Spiders have finished better at a Regional was in 1999 in Providence, R.I., when UR placed eighth to advance to the NCAA National Championship.
"Super steady from the first tournament of the year to the last of the year," said Spiders coach Adam Decker, who was named A-10 Coach of the Year for a record fifth time earlier this month. "There were a few ups and downs in between but they showed the ability to shoot really low scores and stay competitive even after one bad round during the week. There was a lot of fight, a lot of great internal competition, and I think being a fairly young team there's a lot of great opportunity ahead of us as well."
"It's only a stepping stone, really. We've got a lot more good golf in us," said LaPiana. "I think we can just use this year as a little bit of proof that we're a really good team and we can compete with the best of them. It's just another step for the Richmond Spiders golf program."
