BERMUDA RUN, N.C. — Richmond rebounded from a rocky opening to its first NCAA Regional round in nearly a decade, rallying on its second nine Monday at Bermuda Run Country Club to finish at 9-over par (293), 12th in the 14-team field. Starting on the back nine at Bermuda Run Country Club, UR's five golfers combined for a score of 15-over par on holes 10-16 before settling into their surroundings and clawing back enough strokes to move two spots up the team leaderboard over the final 11 holes. The Spiders are two shots in front of Navy and five clear of Little Rock, while the team directly in front of UR is Presbyterian, at 6-over par (290).
Richmond was led by junior Quin Polin Monday, who also had to battle back from a bumpy start to his NCAA Regionals experience. Polin was 5-over par in his first six holes Monday, including a triple-bogey on the par-4 11th hole. He played his final 12 holes in 4-under par to finish the day at 1-over (72), tied for 36th in the field.
"i just tried to play patient, hit fairways, and take it one shot at a time, without thinking about the bad start," said Polin when asked about the key to turning around his day.
Freshman Lucas Rizo-Patron, who won the individual title at last month's Atlantic 10 Championship, shot a 2-over 73 and is tied for 50th, one shot in front of sophomore Carson Baez and senior Drew Carlin, who are part of a group of seven golfers tied for 59th at 3-over par (74).
Junior Jack LaPiana is in 73rd place at 9-over par.
After winning the A-10 Championship last month, Richmond is making its sixth team appearance at the NCAA Regionals and first since finishing 11th among 13 teams at the West Lafayette, Ind. Regional in 2017.
The Spiders will start Round 2 on the 10th tee beginning at 8:55 AM Tuesday. Richmond will be paired with Presbyterian and NC State.
