Rizo-Patron, Baez Lift Spiders on Day 2 of NCAA Regionals

BERMUDA RUN, N.C. — Freshman Lucas Rizo-Patron (6-under 65) and sophomore Carson Baez (2-under 69) led a resurgent Richmond lineup in Round 2 of the Winston-Salem NCAA Regional Tuesday at Bermuda Run Country Club. The Spiders combined to shoot 4-under par (280), a 13-stroke improvement from Round 1, to move into 10th place at 5-over par (573). Richmond is ahead of Little Rock (+10), Navy (+11), Presbyterian (+12), and Georgia Tech (+13) on the 14-team leaderboard.
After making the turn at even par, Rizo-Patron rallied on the front nine, shooting a 6-under 30 highlighted by eagles on the par-5 4th and the par-5 6th.
"I hit two really good second shots, one to a 29-foot putt and the other in the perfect spot to get up and down 35 yards from the pin," said Rizo-Patron. "I happened to hit the both the third shots exactly how I wanted to and they both went in."
Rizo-Patron's 6-under 65 matched the lowest round of his career and the sixth-lowest round in program history. He moved 36 spots up the individual leaderboard into a tie for 14th at at 4-under par (138). Rizo-Patron is the only player in the field with multiple eagles over the first two rounds.
Baez registered 16 pars and two birdies Tuesday, the first of which came on a 148-yard holeout on the 1st hole after he was forced to pitch out from the trees on his second shot. He moved up 21 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 38th at 1-over par (143). Through two rounds, Baez's 26 pars are tied for the sixth most of any golfer.
Junior Jack LaPiana offset three bogeys with two birdies to shoot 1-over (72) Tuesday, an 8-shot improvement from Monday. He's in 69th place at 10-over par (152).
Richmond's final team score came from senior Drew Carlin, who shot a 3-over 74 and is tied for 59th at 6-over par (148). He's one shot behind junior Quin Polin, who is tied for 57th at 5-over par (147) after a 75 (+4) Tuesday.
With only Wednesday's final round remaining, the Spiders have a chance to finish in the top 10 at an NCAA Regional for the first time since 1999. Richmond will begin Round 3 beginning at 8:55 AM on the 10th tee and will be paired with Little Rock and the Naval Academy.
