The 2014-15 season will be Jamal Brunt's 10th on the men's basketball staff under Chris Mooney at Richmond. He was promoted to Associate Head Coach for the 2013-14 season.
The Spiders have won an average of 21.5 games per season in the last six seasons, having made four postseason appearances in the last six years, including two NCAA Tournaments and a Sweet 16. Richmond has played in two Atlantic 10 title games, winning the Championship in 2011.
The Baltimore native has helped guide to five postseason appearances, four 20-win seasons and final national rankings of No. 24 in 2009-10 and No. 21 in 2010-11.
“Jamal has had a tremendously positive impact on Richmond Basketball during his time at Richmond,” Mooney said. “His promotion to associate head coach is well deserved! Jamal is an outstanding teacher, coach, recruiter and mentor. I know that Jamal will continue to do great things in his new role.”
Richmond won a school record 26 games in 2009-10, finished 13-3 in Atlantic 10 play, reached the A-10 title game and earned an at-large bid and a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Spiders then broke that school record for wins in 2010-11 finishing 29-8 and 13-3 in A-10 play, reaching the title game for the second-straight year and coming away with its first A-10 Championship.
The Spiders defeated No. 25 ranked Vanderbilt and Morehead State to reach the 2011 Sweet 16. Richmond success included a 32-7 record against Atlantic 10 teams over the two NCAA seasons, tournament victories in the South Padre Island Invitational (wins over Missouri and Mississippi State), the Chicago Invitational Challenge, defeating No. 8 Purdue in the title game, and the Orange Bowl Classic, defeating No. 13 Florida.
The Spiders have won nine of the last 19 games against ranked teams and have 10 ranked wins against ranked opponents since 2008. Richmond has won 12 of the last 24 against BCS Conference opponents, including wins over Florida, Missouri and Wake Forest.
In addition to on-court coaching, Brunt is responsible for scheduling that has led to the Spiders being a consistent top-100 RPI team and led to an NCAA Tournament at-large bid in 2010. Richmond has finished in the top-100 of the RPI in four of the last five seasons, including ending the year 25th in 2010 and 41st in 2011.
In his six seasons as an assistant, Brunt was integral in signing some of the most highly touted recruits in school history, beating out BCS programs in the process. He has mentored Spider student-athletes in academics, helping the men’s basketball team achieve its highest GPA on record.
Brunt spent his first two seasons at Richmond as the Director of Basketball Operations.
Before joining the Spiders basketball staff in the summer of 2005, Brunt was an assistant coach at his alma mater for the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons. At Randolph-Macon, Brunt was involved in all aspects of coaching, including player development, recruiting, monitoring academics, film exchange and breakdown, opponent scouting and on-court coaching.
Brunt received a bachelor's degree in international relations with a concentration in business economics from Randolph Macon in 2003. He is married to the former Erica Glasper. The couple has a daughter, Peyton.
