John Hogan is in his third year on the Richmond staff under head coach Dan Chemotti in 2022. Hogan was promoted to offensive coordinator following his first season on the coaching staff. Hogan joins the Spiders after spending two seasons with Penn State and having a stellar playing career at Cornell.
Hogan helped the Spiders claim the 2021 Southern Conference regular season championship and advance to their record seventh-straight SoCon Tournament championship game. The Spiders ranked 22nd in the nation in scoring offense in 2021, averaging 12.46 goals per game. Richmond was the top team in the country in man-up offense, converting on 63.4 percent of opportunities (26-of-41).Â
Hogan coached Ryan Lanchbury to the SoCon Offensive Player of the Year award and Dalton Young to the SoCon Freshman of the Year honor. Lanchbury scored 67 points in 13 games, ranking first in the SoCon and seventh in the nation averaging 5.15 points per game. He finished the year with 28 goals and 39 assists, ranking fifth in the nation at 3.00 assists per game. Young was tied for the team lead with 35 goals, the most by any freshman in the SoCon. Attack Richie Connell led the nation in man-up goals, tallying 10 on the year in 13 games.Â
Hogan was instrumental in the Spiders finishing 21st in the country in face-off percentage, led by First Team All-Southern Conference award winner Jacob Griffin. Griffin led the league in SoCon games winning 73 percent of his face-offs, going 65-of-89 in face-offs in five games. He was named SoCon Defensive Player of the Week on two occasions this year.
Hogan helped the Spiders’ offense average 12.71 goals per game through the seven-game shortened season 2020. Richmond ranked 18th in the country in shooting percentage at 33.5 percent last spring and the Spiders’ man-up offense was 19th in the country.

Hogan helped freshman All-America Richie Connell (Evergreen, Colo.) finished second in the NCAA Division I in scoring among rookies with 19 goals in seven games. Additionally, Connell led all players in the country in man-up goals last season, notching seven in seven games. Junior attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) led the team in scoring with 30 points, notching 14 goals and dishing out 16 assists.

Hogan spent 2018 and 2019 as an assistant coach at Penn State, helping the Nittany Lions to a 16-2 overall record and advancing to the NCAA Tournament Semifinals in 2019. Penn State finished first in the nation in won-loss percentage (88.9) and was the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Hogan worked closely with the Nittany Lion offense, face-off position and man-up offense during the year. He helped Penn State turn in the nation’s top-scoring offense, averaging 17.94 goals per game – more than two goals better than any other team in the country. The Nittany Lion man-up offensive was also the top unit in the nation, converting on 61.3 percent of its attempts (38-of-62).

Hogan helped Penn State finish ninth in the nation in face-off won percentage at 58.4 (337-of-577). He worked with Gerard Arceri, helping him finish 15th in the nation at the spot, converting 278-of-456 (60.98%). Arceri was a Tewaaraton Award Nominee and was named the Big Ten Specialist of the Year while earning Third Team All-America accolades.

Hogan starred at Cornell in the Ivy League, earning four letters from 2012-15 – including the first two years when Richmond assistant coach Paul Richards was on the staff at Cornell. He finished his career playing in 53 games for the Big Red, scoring 47 goals and handing out 45 assists, good for 92 career points. He was a two-team All-Ivy League selection and led the Big Red to three consecutive Ivy League championships from 2013 to 2015. He scored 19 goals and added 21 assists as a senior while posting 17 goals and 23 assists as a junior. He was named the 2015 recipient of the J.E.B. Sportsmanship Award.

Hogan graduated from Cornell in 2015 with a degree in industrial and labor relations. Upon graduation from Cornell, Hogan spent two years in the Equity Sales Department with J.P. Morgan while also coaching with stints at St. Ignatius College Prep, NXT Lacrosse and the Annapolis Hawks.
