Entering his second season with the Spiders, Grossi got off to quite a start in his first season at Richmond.
With Grossi on the sidelines, the Spiders posted a school-record 12 wins, reached the highest ranking in school history at No. 11 in the polls and reached the conference championship for the fourth straight season.Â
Grossi worked with the Spiders' face-off specialists, including all-conference performer Peter Moran. Under Grossi's tuteledge, Richmond won 188 of 319 face-offs (.589), the highest percentage in school history. Â
“Adding Steve to our staff is really exciting for our program. He stands for a lot of the same intangibles our program takes pride in on daily basis. He understands the importance of loyalty, he is a consummate professional and he has a superb work ethic,” Chemotti said.
Coming to Richmond in the fall of 2016, Grossi brought a wealth of experience as a player and a coach, serving as a defensive coordinator at three institutions as well as being an all-conference defender during his own collegiate playing career.
Most recently, he spent last year serving as the defensive coordinator at perennial Ivy League power Princeton, under his former head coach at Drexel, Chris Bates.
“As a player and a coach, Steve has learned and been mentored by some of the best coaches in the game and we are enthusiastic about what he can add to our team and share with our student-athletes. In a very short time, he has already made strong contributions to our program. We are lucky to have him as a Spider,” Chemotti said.
Prior to his time with the Tigers, he spent three seasons at Saint Joseph’s, where the Hawks twice finished in the top-six in the country in scoring defense. During his final two years, SJU went 6-0 in conference play and allowed under eight goals per game.
This will not be Grossi’s first stop in the Commonwealth as his first stop came at Division III power Hampton-Sydney.
During his playing career at Drexel, Grossi twice earned First Team All-CAA accolades as a longstick midfielder. He was a two-time team captain for the Dragons and during his senior year was named to the Tewaaraton Watch List.
He also spent a season playing professionally with the Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League.Â
