“Coach Layne is one of the hardest workers I have known in my years of coaching,” head coach Dan Chemotti said at the time of his hiring.
"I was lucky enough to work with Coach Layne for a few months while at Loyola and it was obvious that he was meant to coach. He is very trustworthy, organized, hard working, and enthusiastic in everything that he does.”
Despite close results in the early-going, it took the sixth game of the season for the team to break through and get a win against Vermont in Durham, North Carolina on March 8. That was the start of a run of four wins in eight games, including a pair of Atlantic Sun Conference games that propelled the young squad into the four-team ASun Championship Tournament. The Spiders beat both the top seed and host Mercer and second-seed High Point, avenging two regular-season losses and stringing together back-to-back wins for the first time in team history, and the one time that it mattered, as they earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA. The Spiders played at Air Force in the NCAA Tournament.
Five Spiders landed on the All-Conference teams, and five of the 12 members of the All-Freshmen Team in the ASun wore Richmond jerseys. Mitch Goldberg was named Freshman of the Year and earned Tournament MVP as the Spiders placed five on the All-Tournament Team after capturing the hardware in Macon, Georgia.
The Spiders ranked 12th in the country for caused turnovers and second in scoring defense in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Richmond held opponents to 10 goals or less in half of its regular-season games, including a run of five games in a row.
As part of his responsibilities at Loyola, Layne assisted in developing and maintaining the annual operational budget, as well as overseeing all purchases and contractual agreements as it pertained to the program. Layne also supervised the team manager and video coordinator, while helping organize and direct on-campus recruiting visits.
A standout for the Greyhounds, Layne was a four-year letterman and three-year starter at Loyola, earning All-ECAC First-Team honor in 2010 and second-team laurels in 2009.
Following his senior season in which he had 32 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers and helped the Greyhounds advance to the NCAA Championships for the third time in his career, Layne was named an USILA All-American. As a team, Loyola finished third nationally in scoring defense that season. In his four years on the Greyhounds' defense, Layne picked up 107 ground balls and caused 46 turnovers.
