John Studer enters his third season as Assistant Coach for Program Management with the University of Richmond Women’s Basketball program in 2025–26, after serving four years as Director of Program Development. In this role, Studer leads the program’s non-conference scheduling, sports technology and contracts, video and analytics, Spider camps, and scout team operations. He also delivers opponent and self-scouting analysis, prepares scouting reports, and serves as the team’s liaison for marketing and promotions, as well as alumni, donor, and community relations.
Since joining the Spiders, Studer has played a key role in the program’s recent success, which includes back-to-back Atlantic 10 regular-season titles and a return to the NCAA Tournament during the 2024–25 season. He was instrumental in Richmond’s historic win over Iowa State — the team’s first NCAA Tournament victory since 1991 — and has helped support a culture of strategic preparation, player development, and competitive excellence.
During the 2022–23 campaign, Studer helped guide the Spiders to a then-record-breaking season, highlighted by a dominant win over Longwood inside the Robins Center, a deep run in the A-10 Championship, and a berth in the WNIT — Richmond’s first postseason appearance since 2015.
In 2021–22, Studer contributed to a 16-win season that included an eight-game win streak, a perfect mark at the FAU Pre-Christmas Tournament, a buzzer-beating A-10 win at George Washington, and a Power Five victory over Virginia at the Cavalier Classic.
He was a key part of the staff that helped Richmond improve to 13-9 during the shortened 2020–21 season, picking up another A-10 Championship second-round win. In his first season in 2019–20, the Spiders reached the 15-win mark, with Studer playing an active role in on-court development and program strategy.
Studer came to Richmond after one season on the Bucknell Women’s Basketball staff as Video Coordinator in 2018–19, where he helped the Bison to a program-record 28 wins and a Patriot League Tournament title. He supported the coaching staff with advanced analytics, opponent scouting, and game film analysis. Under his guidance, Bucknell broke multiple offensive records in scoring, efficiency, and ball movement.
He brings over 20 years of coaching and basketball operations experience, including 15 years with the Mid-Penn Motion AAU Basketball Club. He served as Vice President (2012–17), Board Member (2003–17), and Commissioner of Girls’ Basketball (2007–17), helping lead the club’s growth into a 25-team program. He coached both the National College Showcase and National Elite teams, mentoring numerous Division I athletes and winning several AAU College Showcase titles.
From 2007–14, Studer also served as the Varsity Assistant Coach at Trinity High School in Camp Hill, Pa., a perennial power in Pennsylvania. His teams reached the PIAA Eastern State Finals twice, claimed back-to-back District 3 AAA titles, and earned Mid Penn Conference Championships in 2011 and 2012. He also co-founded and served as Vice President of the Mid Penn Basketball Coaches Association, representing 30 schools and 175 coaches across the region.
Before entering coaching, Studer enjoyed a distinguished 37-year career in private equity and investment banking, serving as CEO and CFO of multiple portfolio companies and as an executive with Barclays Investment Bank in Chicago, New York, and London.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Illinois, graduating magna cum laude, and an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
Studer and his wife, Sandra, have two daughters: Samantha, who is currently in medical school, and Jennifer, who resides in England with her husband, Ryan, and their two children.
