Fernando Rodriguez finished up his first season as an assistant coach for the Richmond Spiders Swimming and Diving program.
The Spiders won their fourth-straight Atlantic 10 Championship in 2014, the 12th for the program in the past 13 seasons. The Spiders scored 645.5 team points, more than 150 points from the next best squad. Richmond won all five team relays, using eight different swimmers, and 16 swimmers scored points in more than one event for the team at the Championships. During the course of the regular season, the Spiders won nine of 13 dual matchups.
Rodriguez came to Richmond from Colgate University, where he spent one season as an assistant coach for the Raiders. Prior to Colgate, Rodriguez spent three seasons at the College of William & Mary, where he helped the Tribe to 30 rookie records, 47 school records, 14 NCAA B cuts, and one NCAA championship participant. He was also involved in the preparation of three Tribe swimmers for the 2012 US Olympic Team Trials.
Prior to William & Mary, Rodriguez was a volunteer assistant coach for the Athens (Ga.) Bulldog Swim Club for two seasons, while earning his Master's in kinesiology. He first started his career in coaching at Wabash College in Ohio as an assistant coach in 2004-05.
Rodriguez has a wealth of experience at swim camps around the country. He spent two summers at the Bates College Swim Camp in Lewiston, Maine, while also working at the Colonial Swim Camp at William & Mary. He was a camp counselor at the Bauerle Bulldog Swimming Camp in 2010 and at the Total Performance Swim Camp at Kenyon College.
“I have had the great fortune to work with some of the greatest coaches and teams in the United States and abroad. With each stop, I have learned something new and I hope to use this to help the Spiders continue to reach new heights,” said Rodriguez.
He has global experience as well. He was a freelance translator in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He translated articles at the University of Sao Paulo from Portuguese to English. Prior to working as a freelancer, he was an account manager for TMO Global Logistics for a year.
Rodriguez is a 2004 graduate of Kenyon College, where he was a four-year swimmer and team captain as a senior. He won three NCAA Division III National Championships and extended Kenyon's national title streak to 25 years. He was named an All-American seven times, while also being named all-conference seven times as well.
Rodriguez will reside in Richmond and will coach the University of Richmond Masters swim program.
