KALAMAZOO, Mich. - University of Richmond senior forward Greg Stevenson (Fayetteville, N.C./71st) scored a game-high 19 points, while teammate Kinte Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) added 18 to lead the Spiders to a 86-70 victory over Western Michigan Saturday afternoon at University Arena.
The Spiders led from the opening tip and shot impressive from the field, converting 11 of its first 14 shots and 20-for-28 in the half (.714). Smith, who tallied 12 of his season-best 18 in the first half, scored four straight field goals in a three-minute span. Meanwhile the inside game was equally effective, as sophomore center Eric Zwayer went 4-for-4, scoring 10 his 12 points in the first stanza. Richmond led 49-33 at intermission.
Richmond pushed the advantage to 18, its largest lead, early in the second half when junior center Tim Faulconer (Santa Clarita, Cal./Williston Northhampton) delivered on a turnaround jumper. Western Michigan, though, would not go away quietly. A layup by Broncos forward Anthony Kann off a Spiders turnover at the 9:53 mark cut the gap to nine, 68-59. Richmond responded as Reggie Brown (Flushing, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) drilled a three-pointer on the Spiders next trip down the court. The Spiders would maintain a double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest. Richmond finished the game shooting a season-high 66 percent (33-of-55).
The Spiders (2-1) return to action on Saturday, December 2, visiting Mississippi State. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. EST.
