Northwestern Defeats Richmond 3-1

RICHMOND, Va. - The Northwestern Wildcats broke a two-game losing skid as they defeated their host Richmond 3-1 in field hockey action on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Spiders drop their second game in a row and fall to 2-4 on the season.
Northwestern back Nicole Smith (Warbro, Western Australia/Como Senior) would convert her penalty stroke with 24:00 to go in the first half to give the Wildcats the lead for good. Less than four minutes later, Northwestern added an insurance goal off a corner play as Diane Provencher (North Conway, N.H./Kennett) fired a bullet into the cage for the second Wildcats score of the afternoon. Northwestern led at the break 3-0.
Richmond would get on the board in the second half (5:34) when senior Lauren Duffy (Haverford, Pa./ Lower Dauphin) fed junior forward Holly Chase (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) who tipped the ball in for the score. The Spiders outshot the Wildcats 17-9 and had 17 corners to Northwestern's four.
