RICHMOND, Va. - North Carolina jumped out to an early lead and never relinquished it as they topped the University of Richmond, 4-1 in field hockey action this afternoon at Crenshaw Field.
The aggressive Tar Heels got on the board less than three minutes into the contest when Abby Martin (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Schuyerville) scored on a penalty corner, assisted by Abbey Woolley and Erin Cox, to put UNC up early. With North Carolina holding a 2-0 lead, Richmond forward Heather Rice (Oklahoma City, Okla./Heritage Hall) scored her 10th goal of the year, converting a penalty stroke with no time remaining in the first half. North Carolina held a slim 2-1 advantage at the break while outshooting the Spiders 17-3.
The Heels would put the game out of Richmond's reach in the second stanza when in less than a minutes' time they added two more scores. With 12:56 remaining in the contest, Kristen McCann (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) would deflect the ball into the back of the net for her second score of the game and ninth goal of the season. Less than a minute later, Meredith Keller (Greenville, Del./Tower Hill) knocked in her first goal of the season as UNC pulled out to a 4-1 lead.
Richmond goalkeeper Brooke Fuller (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) collected 13 saves, a season-high. With the loss, the Spiders drop to 3-7 overall. They return to action on Wednesday when they host conference rival James Madison. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
