RICHMOND, Va. - The Virginia Cavaliers used a balanced attack in blanking Richmond, 3-0 in field hockey action on Thursday afternoon at Crenshaw Field on the campus of the University of Richmond.
Six minutes into the first half, Cavalier midfielder Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) scored on a penalty corner play to put Virginia on the board first. Junior midfielder Jessica Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) gave the Cavaliers insurance when she flipped her shot into the right top corner of the goal to give the visitors a 2-0 edge with six minutes to play in the first half.
Richmond would have opportunities to score, sending 10 shots at the cage in the second half. Cavaliers goalkeeper Becky Worthington was a thorn in the Spiders' side picking up nine saves. Brooke Fuller (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) stopped 12 shots in the cage for Richmond.
With the loss, the Spiders fall to 2-3 on the year. They entertain Northwestern on Sunday, September 10 at 12:00 p.m. at Crenshaw Field.
