PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - St. Joseph's scored twice and turned back ten shots to capture a 2-1 win over future Atlantic 10 Conference rival Richmond. The win snapped a three-game losing streak to the Spiders, while providing the Hawks with their first win over UR since 1988.
The Spiders, who controlled the action for the better portion of the game, outshot the Cityliners 17-8. SJU, however, lingered around and finally claimed the lead with 9:37 left to play in the game.
St. Joseph's Kathy Sokalski and Brett Dymarczyk teamed up on the game-winner. After a flurry of action in front of the Richmond cage, Sokalski found herself with the ball to the right of the goal. Using a quick step, she maneuvered around a defender and popped the ball into the center. Dymarczyk then tapped the ball high into the back of the net.
Richmond had several good chances to score early in the match and took an early 1-0 lead on a penalty stroke. Richmond junior Heather Rice flicked home the shot for the visitors just ten minutes into the game.
The Spiders had a chance to increase their lead six minutes later when they were awarded another stroke. This time senior Megan Conway took the shot. Bradley, however, snuffed out the attempt, diving to her left to turn back the shot.
