RICHMOND, Va. - American University forward Magdalena Aguilar (Buenos Aires, Argentina/St. Catherine's Moorelands) scored the game-winner with less than a minute remaining in the contest to lift the visiting Eagles past the Richmond Spiders, 1-0 in CAA field hockey action this afternoon.
Both goalkeepers had exceptional games. Richmond senior net-minder Brooke Fuller (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) collected 12 saves, tying a season-high. The most impressive save of the afternoon came with 5:34 remaining in the contest. American's Aguilar, off the fast break, fired a bullet at Fuller who dove to keep the ball out of the net. American goalkeeper Lauren McDonnell (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) was equally impressive, posting seven saves on the afternoon.
The game appeared headed into overtime, when off the penalty corner Aguilar rocketed a shot past Fuller for the game-winner with 38 seconds to play. American's Angela Angeles (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) and Rita Delgadillo (Chula Vista, Cal./Hilltop) assisted on the play.
With the loss, the Spiders fall to 3-6, 0-1 on the year. Richmond entertains nationally ranked North Carolina on Saturday, September 23 at 1:00 p.m. at Crenshaw Field.
