WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William & Mary sophomre Ann Ekberg (Virginia Beach, Va.) notched the game-winning goal, as William & Mary blanked Richmond 1-0 in CAA field hockey action at Busch Field. Richmond falls to 7-11 overall and 1-4 in CAA action. The win secures a second-place finish in the regular season CAA standings for the Tribe and the No. 2 seed in the CAA Tournament that starts November 4.
Neither team could generate much offense in the first half. William & Mary held Richmond without a shot while generating eight of its own. Jess Jiao (Hummelstown, Pa.) had the best scoring chance in the first half when the Tribe was awarded a penalty stroke. Spider goaltender Brooke Fuller was up to the challenge, however, deflecting Jiao's shot away to preserve the 0-0 tie.
William & Mary held a slim 4-3 edge in shots in the second half, but got the one that counted at the 31:56 mark when Ekberg picked up a lose ball in front of the Spider goal and put her shot into the back of the cage. It was her team-leading 11th goal of the season.
Richmond travels to Maryland on Sunday.
