Richmond Bests George Mason, 73-62

RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's basketball team placed four players in double figures led by sophomore center Krystn Gull's (Asheville, N.C./Erwin) 14 points to claim a 73-62 victory over George Mason in both teams' Colonial Athletic Association opener today at the Robins Center.
Joining Gull in double figures were senior forward Candice Edwards (Newport News, Va./Menchville) with 13 points, while junior guard Michele Koclanes (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) added 11 points and junior forward Tasha Swaby (Satellite Beach, Fla./Satellite) had 10 points. Senior forward Carolyn Constantakis (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) had a near double-double with nine points and eight boards.
George Mason freshman guard Jen Derevjanik paced all scorers with 17 points. Patriot senior forward Jill Regan and Jen Surlas posted 11 points each. In addition, sophomore forward Khalilah Smith snared a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Spiders (3-4, 0-1 CAA) shot 49 percent from the field, including 65.4 percent in the opening 20 minutes, a half which saw Richmond build a 38-31 advantage at intermission behind Gull's ten points. With the game tied at 27-all, the Spiders closed the half with an 11-4 run to own a seven-point lead. Richmond scored 14 points off of 18 Patriot turnovers in the first half.
Richmond ballooned its lead to a game-high 12 points at 52-40 following a Swaby free throw line jumper with 15:21 remaining in the contest. George Mason (6-2, 0-1 CAA) answered with a 13-1 run capped by two Regan free throws to knot the contest at 53 with 8:18 on the clock. Leading 60-57, Edwards hit a big three-pointer to make it 63-57 with 3:49 left. The Spiders controlled rebounds on their own missed free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
Both teams struggled for consistency all day as they combined for 60 turnovers -31 by George Mason and 29 by the Spiders. In the closing half, Richmond capitalized on Patriot giveaways, scoring 19 points on 13 George Mason turnovers.
Today's win snapped Richmond's season-long three-game losing streak.
Richmond returns to action on Wednesday, December 20, hosting Coppin State at 7 p.m.
