GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of Richmond women's basketball team dropped a 78-64 decision to Manhattan in the consolation game of the UNC Greensboro Marriott Classic at Fleming Gym today. With the loss, the Spiders record evens at 2-2, while the Jaspers improve to 3-1 on the season.
Senior forward Lizz Greene (Berwyn, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) paced Richmond with 15 points, while Manhattan placed three players in double figures, led by freshman forward Rebecca Tompkins' 14 points. Sophomore guards Christine Bach and Tiffany Schettig had 11 points each. Junior forward Tasha Swaby (Satellite Beach, Fla./Satellite) bolstered the Spiders with nine rebounds. Richmond, however, continued to struggle on the boards, losing the rebounding battle, 52-42.
For a second straight day, the Spiders fell behind by double figures at halftime, trailing 39-25 at intermission. Turnovers were costly as the Spiders committed 20 giveaways in the opening 20 minutes and 33 for the game.
Manhattan increased its advantage to as many as 21 points (52-31) with 13:35 remaining. However, the Spiders answered with a 22-5 spurt to close the margin to four points at 57-53, capped by a short jumper in the lane by sophomore center Ebony Tanner (Garner, N.C./Ravenscroft). The Jaspers built its lead back up to nine points (62-53), before Richmond cut it back down to six (64-58) with 4:45 on the clock, following a three-pointer by shooting guard Elise Ryder (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade Julienne).
The comeback seemingly took some energy out of the Spiders as they couldn't quite narrow the margin any further despite having a host of open shots in the closing minutes. Manhattan went on a 14-6 scoring spurt to decide the contest and hand the Spiders its second straight setback. Richmond fell to Rice, 77-65 in the tournament's first round game.
Despite a furious comeback, Richmond could not ultimately overcome a 14-0 spurt which turned a tied (9-9) game into a 23-9 Manhattan lead with 9:59 remaining in the first half. The Spiders would again slice the lead to as few as six points at 23-17, but Manhattan answered with a 16-8 spurt and owned a 39-25 lead at halftime.
The Spiders will open its home campaign on Thursday, November 30, hosting Wake Forest at 11:30 a.m. at the Robins Center. For ticket information, stop by or call the Robins Center Ticket Office at (804) 289-8388.
