UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Playing in its first Atlantic 10 field hockey match, the University of Richmond needed extra time to defeat the visiting Temple Owls, 1-0 Saturday afternoon at Crenshaw Field. In an evenly played match throughout, senior Heather Rice (Oklahoma City, Okla./Heritage Hall) ended the contest at the 9:17 mark of the first overtime as she notched her 10th goal of the season.
The first half saw the two teams combine for only six shots on goal, but in the second stanza the Spiders fired eight shots and the Owls took seven. Freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Alpert (Rockville, Md./Wootton) collected four saves in the second session, and seven for the match, on her way to recording her third shutout of the season. A key stop of the match belonged to defenseman Erika Cohen (Villanova, Pa./Radnor) when, late in the second half, the senior blocked a shot on the goal line and then quickly cleared the ball.
After a scoreless 70 minutes, Rice took the ball into the right corner, just over five minutes into the first overtime, and then charged along the end line towards the cage. As she got to the goal, she placed a perfect shot over the goalie and just inside the far post to end the contest. The win improves the Spiders to 8-5, 1-0 in the Atlantic 10. The loss drops the Owls to 6-8 overall, 0-2 in the Atlantic 10.
The Spiders return to Crenshaw Field tomorrow as they host conference opponent St. Joseph's at noon.
