UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - St. Joseph's junior Kelly Butler scored two goals to lead the Hawks in a 2-0 win against Richmond in an Atlantic 10 field hockey match played at Crenshaw Field on the campus of the University of Richmond.
St. Joseph's (8-4, 2-0 Atlantic 10) carried the action throughout most of the first half, finally capitalizing on Butler's first goal at 32:48. The Clark's Glen, Pa., native drilled a shot into the left corner off a pass from junior Kathy Sokalski to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Butler scored her second goal of the game at the 17:32 mark of the first half. Richmond freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Alpert (Rockville, Md.) made the initial save on Butler's low shot but the ball caromed over Alpert's stick into the goal. Alpert finished the game with five saves, all in the first half.
The Spiders (8-6, 1-1 Atlantic 10) outshot the visiting Hawks 20-15, including a 15-3 advantage in the second half. Richmond earned 11 penalty corner to St. Joe's five.
The Hawks' Lauren Bradley made 15 saves, 10 in the first half, to earn her fourth shutout of the season. Butler's two goals raised her season total to four.
Richmond returns to action at Noon on Saturday, October 20 in an Atlantic 10 contest at LaSalle.
