PHILADELPHIA - The University of Richmond women's tennis team closed out its fall season this past weekend as three Spiders participated in the ITA Eastern Individual Regionals. Junior Vanessa Bagnato (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) and sophomore Jeannette Cluskey (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) each finished with a record of 1-1 in singles play. Cluskey also teamed with sophomore Patty Devlin (York, Pa./York Suburban) as the tandem went 1-1 in doubles competition in Philadelphia.
Bagnato opened the Regionals with a solid victory over Ashley Hyotte (Harvard) in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. She then met up with 87th ranked Ana Radeljevic of Old Dominion and was defeated in two sets.
After beginning the weekend with a bye, Cluskey won her second round match in convincing fashion as she defeated Pamela Floro (Maryland), 6-1, 6-1. In the third round, Cluskey dropped a tough two set match to Yale's No. 1 singles player, Margaret Purcell, 6-3, 6-4. Cluskey was also paired with Devlin in doubles play as the two won their opening round match against Willick/Matijevic (Niagara), 8-0. The duo then fell in a tight match to Kabanova/Saedinia (Syracuse), 9-7.
The Regionals concluded Richmond's fall season. The Spiders return to action on Saturday, January 19 as they host Atlantic 10 opponent George Washington. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. and will be played at the Country Club of Virginia
