UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. (Oct. 3) -- University of Richmond senior forward Heather Rice (Oklahoma City, Okla./Heritage Hall) netted the game-winner in the first overtime to lift the Spiders to a sudden victory win over the American Eagles, 2-1 Wednesday afternoon at Crenshaw Field. Freshman goalkeeper Jen Alpert (Rockville, Md./Wootton) was brilliant between the wickets collecting a career-best nine saves.
After a scoreless first half, the Spiders would get on the board first when senior Leslie Ramich (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) drew Eagles goalie Lauren McDonnell out of the box and then punched in the shot from the left side of the circle to give the home team a 1-0 edge. American would knot the score with 4:20 remaining when junior Magdalena Aguilar beat Alpert in a one-on-one situation to tie the contest at 1-1.
American had numerous scoring opportunities in the overtime, failing to convert three penalty corners. Alperts' most impressive save of the afternoon came at the 6:37 mark in overtime when Aguliar delivered a bullet, which Alpert dove to block out of the box. Less than two minutes later, Rice would convert Richmond's only corner of the extra stanza to give the Spiders the 2-1 victory. Junior Jill Murphy (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) and sophomore Lydia Decembrino (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) assisted on the play.
Rice's seventh goal of this season was also the 55th score of her Richmond career. She is one-goal shy of tying the all-time goals scored record.
With the victory, Richmond improves to 6-4 on the season. The Spiders entertain cross-town rival VCU on Friday afternoon at Crenshaw Field. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
