UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Richmond senior forward Heather Rice (Oklahoma City, Okla./Heritage Hall) posted two goals in helping lift the Spiders past VCU, 3-0 in college field hockey action at Crenshaw Field on Friday afternoon. With her second goal of the day, Rice became the program's all-time leader in career goals scored (57). Freshman goalkeeper Jen Alpert (Rockville, Md./Wootton) was again stellar in goal, posting seven saves in collecting her second shutout of the season.
With a 1-0 lead, Rice took a feed from junior Jill Murphy (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) and from close range fired in her second goal of the day that gave the Spiders a 2-0 lead. The Spiders would add to their advantage in the second half when a streaking Murphy delivered a perfect pass to freshman Lynsey Bateman (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park). Bateman's first shot was deflected but her second attempt was between the wickets for the final score of the afternoon .
The Spiders peppered Rams goalkeeper Abby Stiles, with 16 shots on goal and 26 total shots in the contest. With the victory, Richmond improves to 7-4 on the season. The Spiders entertain Ohio State at 2:00 tomorrow at Crenshaw Field. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
