Spiders Play Well at East Coast Collegiate Championships

NORFOLK, Va. - The University of Richmond men's tennis team enjoyed a successful weekend at the East Coast Collegiate Championships this past weekend. The Spiders were 14-9 in singles play and 5-3 in doubles action at the tournament hosted by Old Dominion University. The team had several players that made strong showings, particularly sophomore Jeremy Howard (Dartmouth, Mass./Moses Brown School) who won the championship in Flight D singles. Freshman Derek Schwandt (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) and junior Danny Scrafford (Centreville, Va./Centreville) each won three singles matches and the duo combined to win the Flight C doubles Championship.
Howard was 4-0 in singles play as he defeated two players from both James Madison and Virginia. In the Flight D finals, he defeated Clint Morse (JMU), 6-2, 6-1. In Flight B singles competition, Schwandt advanced to the semifinals as he defeated two players from Virginia and one from George Mason along the way. Scrafford's three wins came against Radford, VCU, and VMI. In doubles action, Schwandt/Scrafford won Flight C as they defeated Curtis/Guarnieri (UVA), 8-3.
The men's tennis team will return to action October 19-21 as the Spiders travel to Columbia, S.C. for the South Carolina Fall Invitational.
