Spiders Fall 7-5 To The Citadel In Season Opener

Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel Bulldogs scored four times in the bottom of the first inning on their way to a 7-5 baseball victory over the University of Richmond Spiders in the third game of the Berkeley Electric Coop Shootout at Riley Park in Charleston, S.C.
The Citadel improved to 1-3, while the Spiders dropped their season opener.
After Richmond went in order in the top of the first, The Citadel used four hits, one hit batsman, one balk, one error and one wild pitch to tally four runs in the bottom of the first. The Bulldogs added a run in the bottom of the third to take a 5-0 lead.
The Spiders scored four times in the top of the fourth inning. Senior catcher John Nathans (Warwick, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) had a sacrifice fly and freshman outfielder Bryan Pritz (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) added an RBI single.
The Citadel added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-4 lead. Richmond added a run in the top of the sixth inning on another RBI single by Pritz, but that would be all the scoring as the Bulldogs claimed the 7-5 victory.
Junior righthander Dallas McPherson earned the win for The Citadel, going 5.0 innings with three hits, four runs, one earned run, no walks and three strikeouts. Junior righthander Bobby Basham (Rocky Mount, Va./Franklin County) (0-1) picked up the loss for the Spiders, going 4.0 innings with six hits, seven earned runs, four walks and four strikeouts.
Richmond will face South Carolina on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the second round of the Berkley Electric Coop Shootout.
