Charlottesville, Va. - The eighth ranked Virginia Cavaliers (3-1) converted eight free position shots for goals in posting a 16-10 victory over the Richmond Spiders (0-2) this afternoon at Klockner Stadium on the campus of the University of Virginia.
Trailing 1-0 early in the contest and less than a minute after UVa's scoore, Richmond junior atttacker Krissy Brandolini (Berwyn, Pa./Notre Dame Academy) found the back of the net off the pass from senior Jessica Popham (Arnold, Md./Severn School) to knot the game at 1-1. A Jamie Haas free position goal put the Hoos back out in front but the Spiders would answer six minutes later. Richmond scored two goals in a 47-second span, the first from sophomore Katie Dolan (Towson, Md./Towson) and the second from junior Katie Chasney (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) at the 18:02 mark, to take a brief lead (3-2). Virginia would go back ahead 4-3 after a Mills Hook score but Richmond would not go away as junior attacker Carrie Aitken (Paxton, Mass./St. Mark's School) notched the goal for the Spiders and tied the contest for the fourth time of the afternoon. Virginia closed out the half on a 4-1 scoring run, including netting two scores in the final two minutes of the half, to take a three-goal advantage at the break (8-5).
Virginia extended its lead to 11-5, its largest advantage of the game, less than five minutes into the second stanza. Richmond would cut the margin to three after goals from Aitken, Alexis Brandolini (Berwyn, Pa./Notre Dame Academy) and Popham (11-8). Popham's second goal of the game came at the 8:57 mark and again put the Spiders within three (13-10) but the score proved to be the last for the Spiders. Virginia closed out the contest converting three free position shots in posting the 16-10 win.
Richmond will entertain sixth-ranked Loyola on Tuesday, March 20. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
