Spiders Drop A 5-2 Decision To Central Florida

MIAMI, Fla. - Despite claiming the doubles point in a matchup against 50th-ranked Central Florida, the Spiders women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to the Golden Knights at the FIU Varsity Courts on Sunday afternoon.
The Spiders jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage as Spider freshman Jeanette Cluskey (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) teamed with sophomore Jodi Kenoyer (Lighthouse Point, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) to defeat Marieke Gunawan and Sonja Prokopec, 8-3 at the top spot. In addition, Richmond sophomores Vanessa Bagnato (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) and Monika Peetes (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn Science School) bested Ann-Jeanette Svantesson and Dainela Okal, 8-4 at two doubles as the Spiders claimed the opening point.
UCF responded, claiming five of the six singles points with each win coming in straight sets. Kenoyer mustered the Spiders only victory in singles action, defeating Anna Westin in three sets, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 position. In other singles action, Svantesson bested Cluskey at No. 1 (7-6, 6-4) and Gunawan slipped past Kenoyer, 7-6, 7-6 at No. 3 singles. At four singles, Julie Pecastaing registered a 6-2, 6-3 win over Richmond sophomore Casey Cohen (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./The Bolles School), while Prokopec notched a 6-1, 6-0 win over Spider freshman Patty Devlin (York, Pa./York Suburban) at the five spot. In addition, Okal was a 6-1, 6-4 victor against Richmond junior Michele Koclanes (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) at six singles.
Richmond (3-5) returns to action on Tuesday, March 13, taking on Florida International at 2 p.m.
