UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Loyola midfielder Suzanne Eyler scored five times while teammate Lauren Peck added four goals and one assist as the third-ranked Greyhounds ran by the University of Richmond, 18-8 in Colonial Athletic Association play Tuesday afternoon.
Richmond appeared to have the upper hand offensively in the first two minutes of play. Spider senior attacker Jessica Popham (Arnold, Md./Seven School) scored just 56 seconds into the contest. Less than a minute later, Richmond increased its lead when junior Carrie Aitken (Paxton, Mass./St. Mark's School) found the back of the net to pull ahead 2-0. The Spiders first two shots of the game resulted in goals. However, the third-ranked Greyhounds would respond. Loyola took its first lead of the game at the 23:48 mark when Krissy Warnock took the pass from Stacey Morlang and fired at Richmond goalkeeper Kelly Johnson. The rebound shot went back to Warnock who slammed it home. The Spiders would tie the game at 3-3 when a driving Aitken scored with 22:04 remaining in the first half. Richmond managed one more goal, a Lauren Weschler (Woodstock, Vt./Cape Elizabeth) bullet from eight feet out, in the first period (20:26). The Greyhounds, while holding Richmond scoreless the final 20 minutes of the half, erupted offensively netting four goals the final 19 minutes of the first stanza and pulling out ahead 9-4 at the break
A beautiful pass from freshman Libby Berlacher (Villanova, Pa./Agnes Irwin) to Aitken resulted in the Spiders' fifth goal of the game (5-10) at the 24:17 mark in the second half. Loyola, as expected, had an answer scoring four more goals over the next nine minutes and holding the Spiders scoreless. Loyola goalkeeper Tricia Dabrowski, last year's CAA Championship MVP, recorded 12 saves.
