Lane's Complete Game Stops Minutemen 5-3

Richmond, Virginia - Senior righthander Brian Lane (Crofton, Md./Arundel) earned a complete game victory in his first collegiate start as the University of Richmond Spiders defeated the University of Massachusetts Minutemen 5-3 this afternoon at Pitt Field. Richmond improved to 10-11, while the Minutemen fell to 1-6.
Lane (2-0) allowed six hits, three runs and two earned runs. He walked one and struck out a career-high 11.
Richmond got on the board initially with a run in the bottom of the first. Freshman outfielder Bryan Pritz (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) led off with a single, moved to third on a single by sophomore first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers) and scored on a groundout by freshman Adam Tidball (Bethesda, MD/Georgetown Prep). UMass came back immediately with a run in the second on a home run by senior outfielder Gavin Clark, his first of the season.
The Minutemen took a 3-1 lead in the top of the seventh. Sophomore catcher Tom Ellerbrook singled and scored on an error. Junior outfielder Connell Clark also singled and scored on a single by senior outfielder Nick Gorneault.
The Spiders scored the deciding runs in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, freshman second baseman Bobby LeNoir (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) and senior outfielder Matt Reid (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) each reached on bunt singles. Pritz walked to load the bases. Sophomore shortstop David Reaver (Union Bridge, Md./Linganore) had a two-run single that tied the game at 3-3. Pritz scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Chiaravalloti had the final run on a walk and an RBI single by Tidball.
LeNoir had three hits and Reid had two for the Spiders. Reaver and Tidball had two RBI for Richmond. Ellerbrook had two hits for UMass.
Richmond will travel to Liberty on Wednesday, March 21 for a 3:00 pm contest with the Flames.
