Brian Lane Hurls Shutout Against Hokies

Richmond, Virginia - Senior righthander Brian Lane (Crofton, Md./Arundel) hurled his second consecutive complete game and sophomore first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers) smacked a grand slam as the University of Richmond Spiders defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies 7-0 this afternoon at Pitt Field. Richmond improved to 11-15, while the Hokies fell to 13-11.
Lane (3-0) allowed five hits, walked one and struck out five. Lane has pitched 37.0 innings this season with four walks and 31 strikeouts.
Richmond scored twice in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman catcher Adam Tidball (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) led off with a walk. With one out, senior outfielder John Nathans (Warwick, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) singled. Tidball scored on an RBI double by freshman third baseman Chris Dolan (Holmdel, N.J./Christian Brothers). Nathans came home on a sacrifice fly by senior DH Manny Cicchiello (Weathersvield, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) to give the Spiders a 2-0 lead.
The Spiders tallied five runs in the bottom of the seventh, with the highlight being Chiaravalloti's grand slam, his third homer of the spring.
Sophomore shortstop David Reaver (Union Bridge, Md./Linganore) had three hits for the Spiders. Dolan added two hits for Richmond.
Junior outfielder Chris Hutchison (Newport, Va./Giles) had two hits for Virginia Tech.
Richmond will host UNC Wilmington this weekend in a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series at Pitt Field. Friday's game will begin at 2:30 p.m., Saturday's game starts at 2:00 p.m. and the Sunday contest will commence at 1:00 p.m.
