Spiders Pound Out 18 Hits In 17-4 Win Over Cavaliers

Richmond, Virginia - Sophomore first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers) homered in his fourth consecutive game and scored four runs as the University of Richmond Spiders defeated the Virginia Cavaliers 17-4 this afternoon at Pitt Field. Richmond improved to 13-16, while the Cavaliers fell to 17-13.
Chiaravalloti singled and scored in Richmond's three-run first, was intentionally walked and scored in the second, walked and scored in the third and launched a three-run homer to left in the eighth, his sixth home run of the spring and his fourth in the past four games.
Virginia scored once in the top of the first on an RBI double by senior DH Mark Rueffert (Herndon, Va./Herndon). The Spiders answered with three in the bottom of the first and four in the bottom of the second for a 7-1 lead. The big hit in the second was a two-run double by freshman outfielder Chris Dolan (Holmdel, N.J./Christian Brothers).
The Cavaliers added a run in the top of the third on an RBI single by Rueffert. Richmond scored six times in the bottom of the third and took a 13-2 lead on its way to the 17-4 victory.
Senior DH Manny Cicchiello (Weathersvield, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee), sophomore shortstop David Reaver (Union Bridge, Md./Linganore) and Dolan each had three hits for the Spiders. Dolan, Chiaravalloti, Cicchiello and junior third baseman Mike Gula (Austin, Tex./Westwood) each had three RBI for Richmond. Rueffert and senior shortstop Hunter Wyant (White Hall, Va./Western Albemarle) each had three hits for Virginia.
Sophomore righthander Mike McGirr (Lexington, Mass./ Lexington) was the starter and winner for Richmond, going 6.0 innings with nine hits, three earned runs, two walks and seven strikeouts.
Richmond will travel to George Washington on Wednesday, April 4 for a 3:00 contest. The Spiders will visit George Mason this weekend in a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series. Friday's game will begin at 3:00 p.m., Saturday's game starts at 2:00 p.m. and the Sunday contest will commence at 1:00 p.m.
