UNVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Delaware attacker Ashley Moderacki scored five times while teammate Corine Shuck added four goals to lift the Blue Hens past the Spiders, 12-7 on Sunday afternoon at President's Field on the campus of the University of Richmond.
The teams traded free position goals in the first seven minutes of the contest to knot the score at 1-1. Richmond would take the lead at the 18:04 mark as junior Katie Chasney (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) fed senior attacker Alexis Brandolini (Berwyn, Pa./Notre Dame Academy) to take a 2-1 lead. The Blue Hens would strike back scoring the next four goals of the contest. Delaware attacker Kate O'Connell on the right side found a streaking Brooke Mulligan who found the back of the net at the 7:41 mark to put the visitors ahead 5-2. Moderacki tallied her three goal of the first half with 3:47 on the clock on a chip shot into the net. A Richmond goal from Kristy Gallagher (Chatsworth, N.J./Cherry Hill East) with 1:58 remaining in the first stanza would pull the Spiders within three at the break (6-3).
Trailing by four goals, Richmond's Carrie Aitken (Paxton, Mass./St. Mark's School) fed an open Brandolini on the crease at 19:17 to pull the Spiders within three, 7-4. Chasney's unassisted score at 15:20 (7-5) would be as close as the Spiders would draw. Delaware would go on a scoring tear, tallying four straight goals in less than a four minute span midway through the second half. Moderacki scored three of her game-high five goals in the second half.
The Spiders fall to 0-1 on the season while the Blue Hens pick up their first win of the season 1-0. Richmond travels to Charlottesville to face the Cavaliers next Saturday, March 10.
