UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. (April 10)--Senior Jessie Popham (Arnold, Md./Severn School) scored two goals and added four assists to lead Richmond (1-9, 1-3) past #16 George Mason (7-4, 2-3) Tuesday afternoon at President's Field. Richmond overcame a 6-2 halftime deficit as senior Alexis Brandolini (Berwyn, Pa./Notre Dame Academy) and junior Carrie Aitken (Paxton, Mass./St. Mark's School) helped to lead the charge, with each scoring four goals a piece in the second half.
With the score knotted at 1-1, the Patriots used a 5-1 scoring run to build a four-goal advantage before the half. After netting her first goal of the game at the 11:22 mark, Patriots sophomore attacker Jill Toomey won the ensuing draw and scored again, less than 20 seconds later, to pull the visitors ahead, 3-1. Katie Keegan's goal at the 4:28 mark gave Mason a 4-1 edge. George Mason added two more scores in the final minute of the first half to take a 6-2 lead at the break.
The Patriots pulled ahead 7-2 after Nikki Leone drove the cage at the 27:48 mark of the second half. Richmond responded, scoring the next three goals of the contest. Aitken, a day shy of her 21st birthday, celebrated her 20th goal of the season at the 25:57 mark (7-4). Richmond's Brooke Garnett (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) won the possession on the next draw. Garnett passed quickly to Katie Dolan (Towson, Md./Towson) who in turn found Brandolini for the score with 25:45 remaining. Richmond and George Mason would trade goals the next 10 minutes. Mason led 9-7 after Keegan dumped in her third goal of the afternoon with 16:04 remaining. It would be the Patriots final score of the afternoon. Popham's score with 8:58 remaining tied the game, 9-9. The Spiders took the lead for good at the 8:09 mark of the half when Aitken went low and skipped the ball into the cage to put Richmond into double digits on the scoreboard (10-9). Popham tallied her fourth assist of the game with 5:14 remaining when behind the cage she delivered a perfect pass to a streaking Brandolini giving the Spiders a 11-9 lead. Richmond would add two more goals in the final four minutes for insurance. Richmond controlled the draw in the second stanza, grabbing 11 of the 14 draw controls of the half.
The Spiders return to action on Friday, April 13 as they travel to Harrisonburg to face James Madison.
