HARRISONBURG, Va. --- Nine different University of Richmond players tallied a goal but it was not enough to topple the 12th-ranked Dukes (3-3, 7-6) as the Spiders (1-4, 1-10) fell to James Madison, 12-10 in Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse Friday afternoon.
James Madison junior attacker McNevin Molly's goal at the 22:40 mark of the first half gave the Dukes a 5-0 advantage. However, Richmond would rally scoring the next four goals of the game. After Jessica Popham's (Arnold, Md./Severn) free position goal at the 13:57 mark, Popham would then force a JMU turnover on the after the Dukes won the ensuing draw. Senior Lauren Weschler (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) picked up the loose ball and drove half the distance of the field for the score to pull the Spiders to within three, 6-3. Richmond senior Lacy Pica's (Cockeysville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) first of two goals of the game came with 6:05 to go in the half and pulled the Spiders within one, 6-5. James Madison's Mindy Leher scored two goals and Molloy one as JMU ran off three consecutive goals in a span of 2:20 to push the lead to 9-5 with 2:37 left in the half. Richmond, however, got a goal from senior attacker Alexis Brandolini (Berwyn, Pa./Notre Dame Academy) with 15 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 9-6 at intermission.
JMU scored twice in the first 4:12 of the second period to go up 11-6. After a 10-minute scoring draught, the teams exchanged goals and the Dukes led 12-7 with 14:26 remaining in the game. The Spiders rallied with three scores in the final 7:24, including two goals in the last minute of play, and had a late goal called back on a crease foul.
