19th-ranked Pirates Stop Spiders 18-6

Greenville, N.C. - 19th-ranked East Carolina scored five runs in the first two innings and 10 in its final two at bats to claim an 18-6 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Richmond Spiders this afternoon in Greenville, N.C. The Pirates improved to 32-9 overall and 10-1 in the CAA. Richmond fell to 18-18 overall and 5-8 in the CAA.
The Pirates scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the first on a double by senior outfielder John Williamson. East Carolina had each of its first three batters single and score in the bottom of the second as the Pirates took a 5-0 lead.
Richmond cut the score to 5-3 on a three-run homer by sophomore first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers), his third in two days and his 11th of the season. The Pirates got those three runs back in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-3 lead. The Spiders scored three times in the top of the seventh and trailed 8-6. East Carolina then scored a pair of runs in the seventh and eight unearned runs in the eighth to take the 18-6 victory.
Freshman catcher Adam Tidball (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) went 4-4 for Richmond. Senior John Nathans (Warwick, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) had three hits and an RBI for the Spiders.
Richmond and East Carolina will conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
