Pirates Sweep Spiders With 7-1 Win

Greenville, N.C. - East Carolina sophomore righthander Davey Penny notched the first complete game of the season for the 19th-ranked Pirates as the defeated the Richmond Spiders 7-1 this afternoon in a Colonial Athletic Association contest in Greenville, N.C. With the sweep, East Carolina raised its record to 33-9 overall and 11-1 in the CAA. The Spiders fell to 18-19 overall and 5-9 in the CAA.
Penny (1-2) allowed Richmond just three hits in the game. He walked one and struck out a career-high 11 batters.
The Pirates scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead. Richmond cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth on a home run to right by sophomore first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers), his 13th of the season. It was his fourth home run in the three-game series. He has homered in five straight games, a school record that he set earlier this season. He has homered in 10 of the past 12 games and has 11 homers in those 12 contests.
East Carolina added a unearned run in the fifth and tallied two runs in the sixth and seventh innings to give the Pirates the 7-1 win.
Richmond will host Towson on Tuesday, April 17 at 3:00 p.m. at Pitt Field.
