Tigers Nip Spiders 3-2

Richmond, Virginia - Junior first baseman Gregg Davies (Olney, Md./Sherwood) had three hits, including an RBI double in the three-run third, as the Towson Tigers defeated the Richmond Spiders 3-2 this afternoon at Pitt Field. Towson improved to 23-10, while the Spiders fell to 18-20.
Sophomore outfielder Joey Marcozzi (Bel Air, Md./Calvert Hall) led off the top of the third inning with a triple for Towson. One out later, senior catcher Ryan Avila (Baltimore, Md./Parkville) walked. Freshman shortstop Brian McKenna (Germantown, Md./Watkins Mill) then hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Marcozzi and giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Davies followed with a double to right, scoring Avila. Davies moved to third on the throw and scored on a passed ball to give Towson a 3-0 advantage.
Richmond came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. Freshman outfielder Chris Dolan (Holmdel, N.J./Christian Brothers) led off with a single and moved to second when senior catcher John Nathans (Warwick, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) was hit by a pitch. Freshman third baseman David Thomas (McLean, Va./McLean) then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move each runner up a base. Dolan scored on a wild pitch and Nathans came home on a single by freshman second baseman Bobby LeNoir (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) that made the score 3-2.
Freshman righthander Jason Summerlin (Reistertown, Md./Owings Mills) was the winner in relief for Towson, entering in the third inning and going 5.0 innings with three hits, two runs, one walk and two strikeouts. Junior righthander Jason Walter (Elkton, Md./Elkton) hurled the final two innings to earn his third save of the season.
Sophomore righthander Mike McGirr (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) was the starter for Richmond, going 7.0 innings with four hits, three runs, two earned runs, one walk and eight strikeouts.
Richmond will host Radford on Wednesday, April 18 at 3:00 pm at Pitt Field.
