Richmond Upsets #42 VCU In Women's Tennis

RICHMOND, Va. (April 16) -- The University of Richmond women's tennis team captured four singles matches to down nationally-ranked VCU, 4-3 Monday afternoon at the UR Tennis Complex. With the match tied at 3-3, Richmond sophomore Vanessa Bagnato (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) registered a 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-4 win over Raluca Ciulei to lift the Spiders past the Rams in their last match of the season.
Trailing one set, Richmond sophomore Jodi Kenoyer (Lighthouse Point, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) won the next two sets to record a victory at two singles over VCU freshman Anca Dumitrescu (3-6, 6-3, 6-4). Richmond captured its other two singles victories due to defaults at the five and six singles positions. Rams junior Martina Nedelkova, ranked sixth nationally, needed an extra set to get past Spiders freshman Jeannette Cluskey (Minneapolis, Minn./Edna) at the top singles spot, 6-7, (10-12), 6-3, 2-6. At the No. 3 singles position, VCU's Silvia Urickova recorded a straight sets (6-1, 6-1) victory over Spiders sophomore Monika Peets (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn Science School).
VCU captured the doubles point winning two of the three matches. Nedelkova teamed with Ciulei to top Cluskey and Kenoyer at No. 1 doubles, 8-3. The Rams sealed the doubles point with a 8-1 victory by Urickova and Dumitrescu.
Richmond concludes its regular season with an 8-10 overall mark and a 4-2 record in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Spiders' win snapped the Rams five match winning streak.
