LEXINGTON, VIRGINIA --- Sophomore first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers) hit two home runs and knocked in six runs as the University of Richmond Spiders defeated the VMI Keydets 17-4 this afternoon at Patchin Field. Richmond raised its record to 22-21 overall, while the Keydets fell to 11-26 overall.
The start of the game was delayed 35 minutes due to rain. The Spiders took an early lead with four runs in the first. Chiaravallotti led off the scoring with his first triple of the season scoring freshman center fielder Bryan Pritz (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier), who led off the game with a single. After a wild pitch allowed Chiaravallotti to score from third, freshman Adam Tidball, (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) doubled to left, catcher John Nathans (Warwick, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) would bring Tidball in from second to put the Spiders ahead 4-0.
The Spiders scored two more runs in the second with Chiaravallotti's first of two home runs on the afternoon. Richmond opened the floodgates in the fourth inning with seven runs capped off by freshman left fielder Chris Dolan's (Holmdel, N.J./Christian Brothers) grand slam to left field. The Spiders would add four more in the seventh.
Matt Ramsey led VMI with two hits on the afternoon including a two-run home run, while Chris Catanzaro hit his sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot to right in the fourth inning.
