Spiders Douse Flames, 3-2

RICHMOND, VIRGINIA --- University of Richmond broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth when pinch hitter Manny Cicchiello (Weathersfield, Conn./Loomis-Chafee) singled with two outs to drive home the go-head run in lifting Spiders past the Liberty Flames 3-2 at Pitt Field on Wednesday afternoon. Richmond improved to 23-21 overall, while Liberty fell to 24-17 overall.
Richmond led 1-0 in the bottom of the first on a RBI single from senior designated hitter John Nathans (Warwick, N.Y./Trinty Pawling). The Flames took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on consecutive leadoff singles by senior outfielder Trey Miller (El Cajon, Cal./Christian High) and senior second baseman Anthony Pennix (Brookneal, Va./William Campbell). Miller scored on a sacrifice fly by Joey Monahan (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter) while Pennix scored on a fielder's choice.
The Spiders added a run in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI single from David Reaver (Union Bridge, Md./Linganore) to knot the score at 2-2. The bases were loaded for the Flames in the top of the eighth when Miller struck out to end the inning.
Richmond opened up the eighth when Nathans advanced to first after being hit by a pitch. He moved to second on a Ryan Martin (Mahwah, N.J./Milford Academy) single. With two outs, Cicchielo's single to right field to plate the winning run.
Freshman lefthander Thomas Martin (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) was the starter and winner for Richmond, going eight innings with seven hits, two runs, one walk and nine strikeouts. Junior righthander Bake Leonards (Wyndoor, Pa./The Hill School) earned his second save of the season, retiring the side in the ninth.
Richmond will host Norfolk State on Friday, April 27 at 3:00 p.m.
