DAVIDSON, N.C. (April 7)-- A late charge by Richmond fell short as Davidson posted a 10-9 women's lacrosse victory Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium on the campus of Davidson College.
Senior Lacy Pica (Cockeysville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) opened the game with a goal after just 23 seconds of play. Davidson went up 3-1 with 16:56 remaining in the half, after a goal from Stephanie Hunter. The Spiders sliced the lead in half after junior Carrie Aitken (Paxton, Mass./St. Mark's School) scored her 16th goal of the season, but junior Chrstin Raimondo responded with a goal of her own to push the lead back to two (4-2). The teams traded goals the rest of the half and entered the break with the Wildcats leading the Spiders, 6-4.
Davidson pushed the lead to three goals but Richmond responded and pulled within one goal behind back-to-back goals from Aitken at the 26:47 and 26:05 marks, respectively. The Wildcats added three more scores, the last coming at the 14:34 mark to lead 10-6. Richmond would steadily knock away at the Davidson lead. Sophomore Katie Dolan (Towson, Md./Towson) added a score at the 8:00 mark while less than four minutes later freshman Libby Berlacher (Villanova, Pa./St. Agnes) recorded her second goal of the game. Aitken would tally her fourth goal of the contest with 3,20 remaining to pull the Spiders within one, 10-9. They could get no closer as unforced errors and a stingy Wildcats defense preserved the Davidson victory.
Richmond hosts Colonial Athletic Association rival George Mason on Tuesday, April 10 at 4:00 p.m.
