McGirr Named CAA Pitcher of the Week

Richmond, Virginia - University of Richmond sophomore righthander Mike McGirr has been named Pitcher of the Week in the Colonial Athletic Association.
A native of Lexington, Massachusetts, and a 1999 graduate of Lexington High School, McGirr earned a pair of wins on the mound this past week. He picked up victories over the University of Virginia at home and at CAA rival George Mason.
McGirr was the starter and winner against Virginia on Tuesday, April 3 at Pitt Field in Richmond, going 6.0 innings and allowing nine hits, four runs, three earned runs, two walks and he struck out seven as the Spiders posted a 17-4 win over the Cavaliers.
On Sunday in Fairfax, Virginia, McGirr carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning against George Mason. He allowed one walk and one Patriot reached on an error in the first six innings. McGirr got a pair of fly outs sandwiched around a walk in the seventh. He then walked two more to load the bases. He then surrendered a single into the hole at short to bring in one run. A pinch-hit two-run single followed to give the Patriots three runs. McGirr went 7.0 innings with two hits, three runs, four walks and five strikeouts as the Spiders defeated George Mason 14-3.
McGirr leads the Spiders with 10 starts and five victories. He has a 5-3 record with a 3.41 ERA. In 68.2 innings, McGirr has allowed 61 hits with 25 walks and he has 50 strikeouts.
The Spiders, under 17th-year head coach Ron Atkins, have won five consecutive games and seven of their past eight contests. Richmond is 17-16 overall and 5-6 in the CAA. The Spiders travel to Radford on Tuesday, host George Washington on Wednesday and play a three-game CAA series at nationally-ranked East Carolina this weekend.
