Stauffer Earns Seventh Win As Spiders Top Terps 9-3

Richmond, Virginia - Freshman righthander Tim Stauffer (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Central Catholic) pitched eight strong innings and the Spiders banged out 17 hits as Richmond earned a 9-3 win over the Maryland Terrapins this afternoon at Pitt Field. Richmond raised its record to 27-25 and ensured itself of a winning season, the 11th in the past 12 years under head coach Ron Atkins. The Terps fell to 16-36.
Stauffer allowed six hits and one earned run over eight innings. He walked three and struck out eight in raising his record to 7-5.
Richmond scored the game's first run in the bottom of the second. Senior DH Manny Cicchiello (Weathersfield, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) led off with a single and moved to second on an error. He scored on an RBI single by freshman shortstop Bobby LeNoir (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum). The Spiders scored three times in the third as Cicchiello had a two-run single and LeNoir added an RBI single to give Richmond a 4-0 lead.
Maryland scored a run in the top of the fifth on a bases loaded walk to junior outfielder Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md./DeMatha). The Terps tallied a pair of runs in the sixth on an RBI fielder's choice by junior DH Kevin McDonald (Rockaway, N.J./Morristown-Beard) and an RBI single by junior first baseman Ray Gemmill (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) to pull Maryland to within one at 4-3.
The Spiders got those three runs back in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman catcher Adam Tidball (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) had a sacrifice fly to the shortstop and sophomore first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers) had a two-run single to put Richmond on top 7-3.
Richmond's final two runs came on long balls as freshman outfielder Chris Dolan (Holmdel, N.J./Christian Brothers) homered to lead off the seventh, his fourth of the season, and Tidball smacked his 10th of the spring to lead off the eighth as the Spiders claimed the 9-3 win.
Chiaravalloti had three hits and two RBI for Richmond. Five other Spiders had two hits. McDonald was the only Terp with two hits.
Richmond will conclude its 2001 season on Saturday, May 12 with a 1:00 p.m. contest against Maryland.
