University of Richmond, Va. -Richmond Head Coach Ange Bradley was all smiles when the horn sounded at the end of the Spiders' 6-2 victory against Longwood College Wednesday at UR's Crenshaw Field. The win marks Bradley's first at Richmond, as the Spiders opened the 2001 season in convincing fashion. Richmond scored two goals in the first half, before breaking out with four in the second.
The Spiders' first goal of the season came off the stick of sophomore Brittany Parrish (Anchorage, Ky./Assumption) as she took the assist from junior Jill Murphy (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) as she tumbled into the goalbox. After Longwood tied the score, Richmond's second goal came off a bouncing ball shot from senior Leslie Ramich (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) that put the Spiders up 2-1 at the break.

The floodgates opened in the second half, triggered by senior All-American Heather Rice's (Oklahoma City, Olka./Heritage Hall) first goal of the season. Ramich was credited with the assist. Richmond then scored three goals in five minutes, led by Rice's second goal of the game. Ramich chimed in, tallying her second goal, making the score 5-2. Parrish then collected her second goal of the game to complete the scoring.
The Spiders' offense tallied 21 shots, while the defense allowed only seven. Freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Alpert (Rockville, Md./Wootton) recorded four saves and had a solid game between the wickets.
"It's a great feeling," said Bradley. "I'm looking forward to an exciting season."
Richmond notched its first win of the season and has won its last two opening games. The Spiders return to action at 11:00a.m. on Saturday September 1, against Radford in Boone, N.C.
