Charlottesville, Va. - The Spiders field hockey team lost its first game of the 2001 season at the hands of the Virginia Cavaliers in Charlottesville Wednesday evening, 2-0. Richmond began the season with a streak of five straight wins, best in school history, before tasting defeat for the first time.
Richmond struggled throughout the game, only managing three total shots. Juniors Kristin Gavin (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) and Jill Murphy (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) accounted for the Spider offense taking all shots accounted.
The Spiders fought hard allowing a late goal in the first half, when Kiersten Van Hooser snuck one by freshman netminder Jennifer Alpert (Rockville, Md./Wootton). Unfortunately that was the difference, as Alpert tallied six saves in her toughest game between the stakes to date.
Richmond looks to return to its winning ways, returning home at 2:00p.m. Sunday, September 23, to face ACC rival Duke University at Crenshaw Field on the University of Richmond campus.
