University of Richmond, Va. - The University of Richmond Spiders dropped their second game of the season, 3-0 to a dominating Duke team in Sunday afternoon college field hockey action. After opening the 2001 campaign with five consecutive wins, the Spiders have lost two straight to nationally ranked opponents.
Richmond only managed four total shots throughout, as Duke shut down a struggling Spider offense. Sophomore Courtenay Martin (Anchorage, Ky./Louisville Collegiate) provided the only legitimate scoring opportunity with a laser on goal late in the second half, only to be denied by Duke netminder Hallie Smith.
Freshman keeper Jennifer Alpert (Rockville, Md./Wootton) had her most difficult game in her young collegiate career, allowing a season high three goals. Alpert hung tough, giving up only one goal at the half on 10 Duke shots. Duke had a total of 17 shots on the afternoon, allowing Alpert to tally four saves.
Richmond is 4-1 on the road this season and looks to return to the winner's circle when the Spiders take on James Madison at 7:30p.m. Friday, September 28 in Harrisonburg Va.
