Boone, N.C. - Richmond (3-0) finished its weekend road trip with a 3-1 victory over Appalachian State (1-1) Sunday afternoon in college field hockey action. The win was Richmond's third consecutive to open the season and gave the Spiders their best start since the Westhampton College varsity field hockey team opened its season 4-0 in 1976.
The Spiders scored their first goal after homestanding Appalachian State received a yellow card. Taking advantage, junior Jill Murphy (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) took an unassisted slap shot that hit the back of the net putting the Spiders up 1-0 with 11:23 remaining in the first half.
After the break, Murphy came out firing, scoring her second goal at the 31:28 mark. Senior Heather Rice (Oklahoma City, Olka./Heritage Hall) was credited with her first of two assists on the afternoon. Rice's second assist came when sophomore Brittney Parrish (Anchorage, Ky./Assumption) split the pipes, putting the Spiders up 3-0.
Defensively, Richmond was solid, allowing only nine shots. Freshman goalkeeper Jen Alpert (Rockville, Md./Wootton) recorded five saves. Offensively the Spiders racked up 20 shots, led by Rice's eight.
The Spiders hope for continued success when they return to action at noon Saturday September 8, against Cornell in Newark, Del.
