Richmond Cruises Past George Washington, 190-109

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's swimming team put on another dominating performance today as it defeated George Washington, 190-109, at the Robins Center Natatorium. The Spiders improved their record to 10-2 this season as they won 13 of 16 events, led by freshman Mary Adams (Williamsburg, Va.) and junior Elizabeth Cook (Rockville, Va.) who each won three individual events and junior diver Katie Shipe (Mendon, N.Y.) who swept the diving competition.
Adams, a three-time Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week performer, won the 200 freestyle (1:53.22), 200 backstroke (2:09.47), and 200 breaststroke (2:23.80). Her time in the 200 freestyle tops her Atlantic 10 best 1:53.80 and is the fifth fastest time ever by a Spider. Cook, the reigning conference Performer of the Week, was victorious in the 200 butterfly (2:09.59), 500 freestyle (5:08.46), and 200 IM (2:11.40). Cook's time in the 500 freestyle tops her season best by almost two seconds and is the seventh-fastest time is school history. Also winning individual swimming events was junior Leigh Figh (Montgomery, Ala.) in the 1000 freestyle (10:37.91), senior Kristin Newkirk (Marietta, Ga.) in the 50 freestyle (25.01), and sophomore Maureen Sabri (Chambersburg, Pa.) in the 100 freestyle (53.70).
In diving events, Shipe recorded scores of 242.70 in the one meter and a season-best 260.40 in the three meter. The 200 medley relay team of Adams, Sabri, Newkirk, and senior Kristin Cavanah (North Palm Beach, Fla.) finished with a time of 1:49.39. Rounding out the winners was the relay team of Lauren Telander (Lake Forest, Ill.), Julie Waizenhofer (Mason, Ohio), Megan O'Hara (Maple Glen, Pa.), and Lindsay Globerman (New City, N.Y.) who teamed to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:38.42.
The Spiders return to action Saturday, February 2 at 1:00 p.m. as they travel to Annapolis, Md. to face the U.S. Naval Academy.
