UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond department of athletics announced today that Josh Farkes, Matt Francavillo, Lane Holby, Lee Rattigan, and Joseph Rendon have signed national letters of intent to join head coach Ron Atkins' baseball program for the 2004 season.
A native of Boston, Mass., Farkes collected 41 RBI's last year. The powerful outfielder recorded a .406 slugging average and stroked seven home runs in his junior year.
A 5-11 right-handed pitcher, Francavillo (Endicott, N.Y.) holds the Union Endicott High School record for strikeouts with 85. He posted a 6-1 record with an 0.59 ERA in 47 innings pitched. An All-State selection and member of the 18-4 2002 New York State Champion team, Francavillo pitched four shutouts out of his six wins.
Another record-holder, Holby set the single-season strikeout record with 102 in 80 innings pitched during his junior year at the Westminster Schools. The Atlanta, Ga. native posted a 10-1 record and received All-County and All-Region honors.
One of the fastest players in the region, Rattigan earned Manchester West Athlete of the year in Bedford, N.H. The 5-10 outfielder has earned 11 varsity letters and All-State in baseball, football and track.
With a three-pitch arsenal, Rendon is a 6-3 right-hander from Tom Clark High School in San Antonio, Texas. The All-District hurler has participated in several Perfect Game and Team One Showcases. Rendon has also been ranked by Prospects Plus.
"We are very pleased with our 2004 freshman class," head coach Ron Atkins said. "We feel very good about their potential and hope that they will be able to step in and contribute right away."
The Spider baseball team opens the 2003 season by hosting George Mason at 2:30 p.m. on February 18.
