UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Number one-seed University of Richmond defeated Saint Joseph's 1-0, this afternoon to advance to title game of the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Spiders will face Massachusetts, who posted a 2-1 victory over West Chester. The finals will be held tomorrow afternoon at Crenshaw Field at 1:00 p.m. on the University of Richmond campus.
In the opening game, both teams struggled in the early phases to generate scoring opportunites. After a scoreless first half, Richmond's Melissa Yuppa (Fairfield, N.J.) gave the Spiders' a 1-0 lead with a little over three minutes remaining. The goal, off a penalty corner, occurred after a shot by Kristin Gavin (Roseland, N.J.) was saved and junior Brittney Parrish (Louisville, Ky) was able to tap the loose ball to Yuppa for the open shot. Richmond advances to the title game for the first time, while the Hawk's end their season with a 9-9 record. The Spiders have now won their last twelve games.
In the second contest, Massachusetts opened scoring midway through the first period at the 15:05 point when freshman Jamie Bawden (Penticton, British Columbia) knocked the ball into the box after a scramble in front of the goal. West Chester evened the score three minutes later as junior Kendra Wood scored off a penalty corner. Golden Ram teammates Stacey Tomes (Zionsville, Pa.) and Liz Morrow (West Chester, Pa.) assisted on the play. Massachusetts set the final margin at 2-1 at the 53:12 mark. Sophomore Danielle Carrier (North Attleboro, Mass.) tallied the score with the assist coming from Sarah Bohonowicz (South Deerfield, Mass.). Massachusetts improves to 5-16 on the season while West Chester concludes its season with a 9-10 record.
